R . Michael Crossen

R. Michael Crossen grew up in Hull, Massachusetts, a narrow Atlantic peninsula where coastal life fostered an early sensitivity to history, place, and visual detail. After graduating high school in 1965, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Identified early for his aptitude in languages, he was redirected from infantry training to Washington, D.C., where he trained as a military linguist, translator, and interrogator. From 1967 to 1969, Crossen served two tours in Vietnam, assigned to the northern I Corps region near the Demilitarized Zone—one of the most volatile areas of the war. Working alongside South Vietnamese forces, CIA operatives, and veterans of the wartime Office of Strategic Services, he participated in intelligencegathering operations associated with the Phoenix Program. His duties included interrogating village suspects, Viet Cong operatives, and North Vietnamese Army personnel, experiences that profoundly shaped his understanding of war’s moral complexity and human cost.

After returning to the United States, Crossen spent nearly a decade in federal service in Washington, D.C. Alongside his professional career, he developed a deep engagement with American folk and maritime art, particularly the regional traditions of Cape Cod and New England. His writing now blends firsthand military experience, archival research, and artistic analysis, examining how history is preserved not only through documents and testimony, but also through image, craft, and cultural memory.
